Five local artists and photographers will be hosting an art show on the second Friday in June called “Aggregate Mass” at the Church of Love in Spenard.

The show will feature work from local photographers and artists Young Kim, Adan Hernandez, Allison Theriault, Ted Kim and Ryan Chernikoff.

“Aggregate Mass” first started out as series of photo-zines that Chernikoff made, but the idea has been expanding to become one cohesive body of work by multiple artists.

“One of our main goals is to provide an open space for artists to express themselves in a way that speaks true to their individuality while still embracing the connection that exists between all of us as a community. Another major goal we have is to hopefully inspire others to create and make their voices heard,” Chernikoff said.

Chernikoff and Theriault will be showcasing film photography and zines, while Young Kim will be showing some photographs, primarily portraits, that he made during his last semester at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

I’ll be sharing some black and white portraiture dealing with transformation and what it means to be human,” Young Kim said.

Ted Kim says that this is his first time having an art show outside of his usual drawings and paintings. He’s excited to try something new.

“I have been doing art shows of my usual drawings for the past 15 years in Anchorage and so to try something new feels really great,” Ted Kim said. “I’ve always enjoyed photography but I can’t say I’m by any means a photographer. And so to be a part of this show alongside Ryan, Allison, Young and Adan, well I felt a little nervous joining photographers that I really enjoy and admire for their work that they do.”

Ted Kim mixes photography and art by incorporating his drawings into photos.

“I draw a lot and years ago I came up with the idea to cut out my art and place it front of a camera while capturing the ‘real’ environment at the same time,” Ted Kim said.

Also in the show is Adan Hernandez. You may recognize his photos from his popular Instagram @ataritacos. Hernandez oftentimes takes photos of everyday items, but is most notably known for his snapshots of couches.

Chernikoff chose the Church of Love for the show’s venue because of the church’s involvement in the community.

“I have wanted to do a show at Church of Love for a while now, I work in middle Spenard so I see the positive impact that [the] Church of Love has had on the area,” Chernikoff said.

Theriault agrees with the sentiment, saying that the Church of Love is a “rad little spot in the heart of Spenard.”

Framed art, prints, zines, stickers and other items will be available for purchase at the show. To see more of the artists’ work, visit their Instagram pages.
