Mike Jipping has been home-brewing for a decade. He began experimenting with brewing sodas in his home, and around four years ago, the idea came for starting his own local soda company. Beach Tribe Sodaworks was born.

Jipping is a brewer’s apprentice at Broken Tooth Brewing Co. and brews his Jipping Ginger Beer out of the facility. Jipping Ginger Beer is only one flavor, but Beach Tribe Sodaworks is a bigger umbrella, Jipping says. Right now, Jipping says that he’s really focused on the Jipping Ginger Beer in order to scale it for market. It’s the only flavor that he’s currently canning and bottling.

“There are so many things that I love about this whole process,” Jipping said. “I’ve been appreciating more and more connecting with local farmers and food purveyors and being part of the whole Alaska food chain.”

In May of this year, Beach Tribe Sodaworks launched a Kickstarter Campaign and raised $12,640 by 61 backers.

“Your support will help us with supplies, packaging, inventory, equipment, and merchandise.  We plan to order bulk cans, bottles, and ‘Togo’ cups, along with more equipment and market supplies, along with some merch to rock it this summer,” reads their Kickstarter page.

Jipping said that the Campaign was successful on all accounts.

“We use raw, unfiltered honey for the sweetner, so it’s got a more, I would like to think a more, in-depth sweetness to it… If you put it up against most of the other sodas that are using extract for their soda, I think you can really taste the difference,” Jipping said.

One Facebook reviews says, “Love!!! The ginger brew!!! Refreshingly spicy and very tasty.” Another says, “Great ginger beer with only fresh ingredients.”

“It tends to be like, love it or no thanks right away. People that don’t have a pallet for it, right away, they’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, too much!’” Jipping added.

Beach Tribe Sodaworks is at the South Anchorage Saturday Market and the Fire Island Airport Heights Wednesday Night Market. In the fall time, Jipping is looking at other markets like the Center Market in the Midtown Mall and various holiday markets.

You can find Jipping Ginger Beer at Froth and Forage, the new Chain Reaction Cycles, Anchorage Wine House on south side, Cynosure Brewing, Anchorage Distillery, Black Cup, Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop in Airport Heights, and Marco T’s Pizzeria. Soon, Double Shovel Cider Company will carry Beach Tribe Sodaworks.

Additionally, Bear Tooth Theatre Pub & Grill has a special pink lemonade, made with Jipping Ginger Beer and Anchorage Distillery Benefactor Vodka.
